communication failures in the fort hood terrorism case, and our current scrutiny of the attacks in benghazi, joe lieberman has always put country first. his actions are guided by deeply held principles and aimed toward progress. he has demonstrated his willingness time and again to risk his political career to do what he believes is right for america. joe brings the same dedication to everything he does. working with him on the armed services committee, i know firsthand how devoted he is to our men and women in uniform, and the deep respect he has for their service and their sacrifice. his leadership in bringing about the repeal of the discriminatory don't ask, don't tell law was nothing short of extraordinary, and it gives me great personal pride to have assisted him in achieving that important victory for justice. and it was vintage joe lieberman. he did what was right. he never gave up. and he got the job done. throughout his many years of dedicated service, joe has demonstrated the kind of character that america needs and that the american people deserve. it is not by coincidence that the po

watched al-qaeda elements able to destroy our or damage severely our consulate in benghazi and kill four brave americans. the message has to be sent that the united states is engaged, reeled disability claims to be involved, and the united states is ready to do whatever is necessary to prevent and act that could endanger or take the lives of literally thousands and thousands of innocent people. senator lieberman. >> thanks, john. we've obviously reached a grave moment in the war that's raged in syria now for more than 20 months, and it's grave for the obvious effect that we believe the outside government has weaponnized the chemical and bilogical agents and put them in a position where they can be used fairly rapidly. this, as you look back over the 20 months of the conflict, this follows a series of events, one leading to the other which people said could not happen, and this began, remember, with peaceful demonstrations, and when assad was unable to control them or suppress them, he began to fire on his own people, and they began to defend themselves in a very unfair fight, one many of

.s. consulate in benghazi that killed a u.s.word and three -- u.s. ambassador and three other americans. u.s. ambassador susan rice first attributed it to a spontaneous uprising about an anti-muslim film. that turned out to be false, and now congressional leaders in both parties are demanding answers. and likely the most scandalous incident of the year throwing america's national security into crisis, former cia director david petraeus stepping down over an affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. it's later revealed that the top u.s. general in afghanistan, john allen, is under investigation for inappropriate communication with socialite jill kelley. but the intermingling doesn't stop there. the fbi agent who began this entire investigation is himself accused of sending this picture to kelley. he later says it was e-mailed as a joke. yes, 2012 was the year falling for grace for many of these personalities, and in the digital world we all live in, the question for 2013 is not so much what the next scandal will be, but when will it hit and who's in the headlines. in new york, i'm arthel

in benghazi. it was involved in attacks and planned attacks in europe. a lot of people forget they tried, actually in the 1990s to fly a plane in the eiffel tower much like what happened in new york on 9/11. so it's a very, virulent group that certainly threatens us and our allies. jenna: your expertise on this, peter, what do you think about our military intervention? we'll explain what that means in a moment. what do you think about us getting involved here? is this a good decision now with the tiling? what your thoughts? >> we need to recognize the threat and we need to prepare to do something but we need to really prepare the terrain. i'm very concerned that we're rushing into something that's very half-baked. the african force that is talked about is a little over 3300 men. which is a laughable amount when you're talking about an area the size of texas. it is not a serious force. so they need our help. they need some training but they're not adequate. so until there's really commitment to put a force in there, that can actually do something, we run the risk of jumping into something

at the -- you know, in her term, leading the benghazi situation, and also tim geithner's numbers are so bad because of the terrible fiscal situation we're in. and i think susan rice, i think the president stood behind her, as long as he possibly could, and just couldn't stand behind her anymore. i think what we're seeing, already, with the hagel potential nomination, is i think a lot of the republicans are withholding their judgment. they are -- they don't like the way he was critical of the iraq situation. but many of them, what i'm hearing, is they're reserving judgment. but i think it is good for the administration to throw names out there. to see what kind of feedback they may be getting. but we all know that the nomination process is a tough one, no matter who is put out there to face the questions. >> alice, senator mike crapo of idaho was arrested this week in virginia, for dui, and he's found himself now back in the hometown newspaper in idaho, being compared, at least favorably, to former senator larry craig. listen to this and let's look at the words -- oh, i can't read it. all ri

. there's no question that benghazi continues to be litigated. even on the democratic side, there is some division on this. i've talked to democratic senators who have questioned whether she has the standing, the stature, to be secretary of state. so obviously there's some division about how people view susan rice. but here's the bottom line. she's very close to the president of the united states. she is a key voice in his national security team. that's what could ultimately win the day. john kerry has been campaigning hard for it. he's done everything this administration has asked in their first term. overseas, been quite engaged as chairman of the foreign relations committee. so he's certainly a very strong candidate. but at this point, even people close to the president suggest there's just a bit of a question mark about how much of a fight he wants and how much it will come down to getting somebody he believes in and he's close to into that job. >> congressman cleaver, your thoughts on susan rice as a potential nominee. >> well, i think susan rice is imminently qualified and capable o
